Unmarried couples in Lucknow hotels: IDs, your rights, and 10 myths, answered

A

· 10 min read

No law in India stops two unmarried adults from sharing a hotel room in Lucknow; the Madras High Court said so plainly in 2019 (W.P. No. 31230 of 2019). What a hotel can ask for is ID. "Local ID not accepted" is a hotel's own rule, not the law.

We wrote this because the same three worries keep coming up under Lucknow hotel posts on Instagram: "Unmarried couple allowed?", "I hope there isn't hidden cameras!" and "Pool ke liye alag charges dena padta hai". Below: what the law says, what hotels may still ask, a checklist, and what to do if something goes wrong. This is not legal advice.

How we researched this

We checked 287 places on Google Maps, 17 Instagram reels and 17 local ads, and 6,358 search terms. For this page we also read the court orders and state rules cited below and the Lucknow pages of Brevistay, Bag2Bag, OYO, IYI Rooms and StayUncle. We have not called any hotel, and no platform has paid us.

Last verified: 28 September 2026. We update this page when ratings, prices or hours change.

Quick answers

What does the law say about unmarried couples in hotels?

Nothing stops you. No central or UP law makes it an offence for two consenting adults to share a hotel room. UP rules require the hotel to take ID from guests and share it with the state. Marriage certificates, "no local ID" and couple bans are hotel policies, which a hotel may set but which are not the law.

Documents

What documents do unmarried couples need at check-in?

One valid government photo ID each. The UP Hotel Regulations 2023 require hotels to collect guest ID, so expect both of you to be asked. You do not need a marriage certificate under the law. e-Aadhaar is legally valid, but many front desks still want the physical original, so carry it.

What counts, and what front desks still want

e-Aadhaar is "equally valid like Physical Copy of Aadhaar for all purposes", says the UIDAI FAQ. A masked Aadhaar hides the first 8 digits, which is a good idea when you hand a copy over.

Under Rule 9A of the IT (Digital Locker) Rules 2016, DigiLocker documents count as equal to originals.

In practice, many hotels still insist on a physical original. Arguing at midnight rarely works, so carry the card.

Law vs policy

What is law and what is only hotel policy?

The law asks hotels to register, collect guest ID, share guest details with the state and keep CCTV at entry, exit and the front desk. It says nothing about marital status. Rules like "couples not allowed", "local ID not accepted" or "proof of relationship" are set by the hotel or brand, and they differ from property to property.

  • UP Hotel Evam Anya Purak Avas (Niyantran) Viniyam (Regulations) 2023, approved by the UP Cabinet in June 2023: hotels must collect guest ID, share names, IDs, dates and addresses with the state through a portal, and keep CCTV at entry, exit and the front desk. Neither report we read mentions marital status (The News Minute and Free Press Journal, 7 June 2023).
  • Sarais Act, 1867 (central law): sarais must register with the District Magistrate, who can inspect them freely. It says nothing about marital status.
  • Hotel policy: OYO said in January 2025 (reported by Skift) that unmarried couples would no longer be welcome to check in at its Meerut hotels and that proof of relationship would be asked for. We could not confirm whether this has spread beyond Meerut, so check the current policy page before booking.
Your rights

What rights do unmarried couples have, and which courts said so?

Adults choosing to be together is protected. The Madras High Court said no law stops unmarried adults from staying in hotel rooms, the Supreme Court said living together is not an offence, and privacy is a fundamental right. Courts have not all ruled the same way on every case, so do not treat any single ruling as a guarantee.

  • Madras High Court, W.P. No. 31230 of 2019, Justice M.S. Ramesh, order dated 26.11.2019: "There are no laws or regulations forbearing unmarried persons of opposite sex to occupy hotel rooms, as guests." (LiveLaw)
  • Supreme Court, S. Khushboo v. Kanniammal, 28 April 2010: "Living together isn't an offense." (Indian Kanoon)
  • Supreme Court, K.S. Puttaswamy v. Union of India, 24 August 2017, nine judges: privacy is a fundamental right under Article 21.
  • Allahabad High Court, Akanksha v. State of U.P., 17 December 2025, Justice Vivek Kumar Singh, protected 13 live-in couples: "Once an individual, who is a major, has chosen his/her partner, it is not for any other person...to object." Other Allahabad HC benches in 2024 and 2025 have denied protection to interfaith and live-in couples in other cases (ThePrint), so this is not settled everywhere.
  • UP DGP, 31 March 2017, Anti-Romeo squad rules: "Couples sitting in public places should not be asked for IDs, questioned, frisked or humiliated."
10 myths

Which 10 myths about couple stays are wrong?

Most fear at the front desk comes from things that are not true: that sharing a room is illegal, that you need a marriage certificate, or that "no local ID" is the law. Here are the ten we saw most, each set against what the law or the platform actually says, with the source.

Checklist

What should we check before booking a couple-friendly hotel?

Check the hotel, not only the platform. Confirm the exact listing accepts local ID and couples, read the Google Maps reviews, read the cancellation rule, and ask about extra charges before you pay. Carry both IDs, share your location with a friend, and do a quick camera check when you walk in.

  1. Both of you carry a physical original government ID.
  2. Check the exact hotel carries an "Accepts Local ID" or "Local IDs accepted" tag if you live in Lucknow.
  3. Read the platform's current policy page for couples; policies change (OYO changed its Meerut rule in January 2025).
  4. Read recent Google Maps reviews of the hotel itself. OYO-branded Lucknow listings we checked rate 2.9 to 3.8, with one at 4.6.
  5. Read the cancellation rule. On Brevistay, a refund comes only if you cancel 24 hours before check-in (or within 15 minutes of booking, if you book inside 24 hours); a no-show gets no refund.
  6. Ask what is included and what is extra, before you pay. Pools and add-ons can be charged separately.
  7. Prefer "Pay at Hotel" where it exists, so you see the room first.
  8. Share your live location and the hotel name with a friend.
  9. Do the two-minute camera check below before you settle in.
  10. Save 112, 1090 and 1930 in your phone.
Camera check

How do we check a hotel room for hidden cameras in 2 minutes?

Lights off, phone torch on. Sweep for tiny reflective lenses, look through your phone camera for infrared dots, and check anything that faces the bed or shower. Scan the Wi-Fi list for devices named like cameras. If you find one, do not touch it: photograph it, leave the room and call the police.

The two-minute sweep

Torch sweep. Room dark, torch at eye level, turn slowly. A lens throws back a small bright glint.

Phone camera. Look through it for small glowing dots; many phone cameras show infrared light the eye cannot see.

Usual hiding spots. Smoke detectors, chargers, clocks, mirrors, vents, and anything pointed at the bed or shower.

Wi-Fi list. Scan for devices with names like "IP camera".

If you find one. Do not touch it. Photograph it, leave, call 112. Filming someone's private area without consent can mean up to 3 years in jail and a fine up to ₹2 lakh under IT Act s.66E, and 1 to 3 years under BNS s.77 for a first conviction (3 to 7 years for repeat offenders).

It does happen. In Noida in October 2022, two men planted a hidden camera and tried to extort a couple; both were arrested, and no role for hotel staff was found (Tribune India).

If something goes wrong

Who do we call if something goes wrong at a hotel?

Call 112 for police in an emergency. Women can call 1090, the UP Women Power Line. If photos or videos are misused online, report on 1930, the cybercrime line. Stay calm, keep your IDs ready, and note names and badge numbers if anyone harasses you rather than arguing in the corridor.

On the way there

If you meet at a park or café before check-in, that is a public place. Stay in open, busy areas and keep your phone charged. In Uttar Pradesh, police rules say couples in public places should not be questioned or asked for ID (UP DGP, 2017). If anyone harasses you, call 112, or 1090 (Women Power Line).

Where to book

Where can unmarried couples book a stay in Lucknow?

Brevistay has the most couple-friendly Lucknow listings we found, with local ID accepted on top listings. Bag2Bag lists hourly hotels, but some refuse local ID. OYO has couple and local ID filters, but its Lucknow ratings are mixed. Always check the individual hotel's tags, reviews and the current policy page before booking.

We are not affiliated with any of these. Counts and prices below are what the platforms showed on 28 September 2026.

1. Brevistay

181 couple-friendly and 184 hourly hotels in Lucknow, from about ₹468 a booking (Brevistay, September 2026). Top listings we saw were tagged both "Couple Friendly" and "Accepts Local ID". Refunds only if you cancel 24 hours before check-in (or within 15 minutes of booking, if you book inside 24 hours); no refund on a no-show.

2. Bag2Bag

98 hourly hotels in Lucknow, starting from about ₹609 (Bag2Bag, September 2026). Local ID is tagged per hotel, and several say "Local Id Not Allowed", including The Arcas, Hotel Aryan, Sudha Inn, Silver Stone, Hotel Impact, Coral Tree and Wellness Home. The live site is bag2bag.in; bag2bag.com is a parked domain. We could not read its FAQ in full, so check the current policy page before booking.

3. OYO

171 Lucknow properties in its "OYO welcomes couples" collection, nightly from about ₹412 to ₹4,428 (OYO, September 2026). Use the "Local IDs accepted" and "Pay at Hotel" filters; the app also has a "Relationship mode". We saw no hourly slot on the web for Lucknow (the app may differ). OYO-branded Lucknow listings rate 2.9 to 3.8 on Google Maps, with one at 4.6, so read the reviews. After the Meerut rule of January 2025, check the current policy page before booking.

Two more names you will see

IYI Rooms is a Lucknow-based platform with slots from about ₹499 (IYI Rooms, September 2026). It says "We never ask for marital status" and takes local ID, but its hotel ratings are weaker, many between 2.0 and 3.3.

StayUncle does not list Lucknow; its Lucknow page returns an error. We cannot recommend it here, and its FAQ wording could not be confirmed, so check the current policy page if you use it in another city.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Is it legal for unmarried couples to stay in a hotel in Lucknow?

Yes. No law bars two unmarried adults from sharing a hotel room. The Madras High Court said in 2019 (W.P. No. 31230 of 2019) that there are no laws or regulations stopping unmarried persons of opposite sex from occupying hotel rooms as guests. UP rules from 2023 ask hotels for guest ID, not marital status. A hotel can still refuse you as its own policy.

Do we need a marriage certificate?

Not under the law. The UP Hotel Regulations 2023, as reported, ask hotels to collect guest ID and do not mention marital status. Some hotels still ask for proof of relationship as their own policy, so read the listing and the policy page before you book.

Can we use local ID?

Often yes, but it depends on the hotel. "Local ID not accepted" is a hotel policy, not a law. On Brevistay, top Lucknow listings are tagged "Accepts Local ID", while several Bag2Bag listings say "Local Id Not Allowed". OYO has a "Local IDs accepted" filter. Check the tag on the exact hotel before paying.

Can police raid our room?

Police can inspect hotels and check guest IDs, since hotels must register and share guest details under the Sarais Act, 1867 and the UP Regulations 2023. Being an unmarried couple is not an offence. Stay calm, show your IDs, and if you are harassed, note names and call 112 or 1090.

How do I check for hidden cameras?

Turn off the lights and sweep the room with your phone torch for small reflective lenses. Look through your phone camera for infrared dots. Check smoke detectors, chargers, clocks, mirrors, vents and anything pointed at the bed or shower, and scan Wi-Fi for devices named like an IP camera. If you find one, do not touch it: photograph it, leave, and call the police.

Is OYO safe for couples?

It depends on the property. OYO has a "welcomes couples" collection and "Local IDs accepted" and "Pay at Hotel" filters in Lucknow, but OYO-branded Lucknow listings we checked rate 2.9 to 3.8 on Google Maps, with one at 4.6. In January 2025 OYO said unmarried couples would no longer be welcome at check-in in Meerut. Read the reviews and check OYO’s current policy page before booking.
