Which flowers are used for puja, shaadi and gifting?
Puja: genda, gudhal, kamal, chameli and harsingar. Shaadi: genda strings, rajnigandha stems, mogra gajra and gulab for the varmala. Gifting: gulab, gerbera, lily, carnation, tulip and orchid. Customs vary by family, so treat this as a starting point, not a rule.
Dates for puja are in the puja calendar. For wedding flowers, see varmala designs and haldi decoration ideas. What each flower says as a gift is in what flowers mean.
Which Hindi flower names get confused?
Chameli and mogra are both jasmine, and shops swap them. Harsingar and parijat are one flower. Gulab is the rose, while gulabi only means pink. Kamal is the lotus and kumudini is the water lily that opens at night. When in doubt, ask for the flower by colour and photo.
Which of these flowers does myguldasta stock?
In Lucknow our bouquets use rose, gerbera, lily and carnation, marked in the table. You choose every stem, and your letter is printed free. We do not sell loose marigold or puja flowers, so for those a local phool mandi is the right place.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Hindi name of rose, lotus and marigold?
Rose is gulab (गुलाब), lotus is kamal (कमल) and marigold is genda (गेंदा). Jasmine is chameli (चमेली), sunflower is surajmukhi (सूरजमुखी) and hibiscus is gudhal (गुड़हल). The table above lists 43 flowers with the Devanagari spelling, the Roman spelling and what each one is used for.
What is rajnigandha in English?
Rajnigandha (रजनीगंधा) is tuberose. Its tall white stems are sold by the bunch for weddings, stages and vases. The scent is strongest after dark, which is where the name comes from: rajni means night and gandha means fragrance. It is also easy to keep: stems last several days in water.
Are harsingar and parijat the same flower?
Yes. Harsingar (हरसिंगार) and parijat (पारिजात) are two names for the night-flowering jasmine, Nyctanthes arbor-tristis. It opens at night with white petals and an orange centre, and it falls by morning, so people collect the fallen flowers from the ground for puja.
What is the difference between chameli and mogra?
Both are white, scented jasmines. Chameli (चमेली) usually means common jasmine, a flat star-shaped flower. Mogra (मोगरा) is Arabian jasmine, rounder and stronger in the evening, and many gajras are made from it. Shops sometimes use the two names loosely.
What is a bouquet called in Hindi?
A bouquet is guldasta (गुलदस्ता). A single flower is phool (फूल), a garland is mala (माला) and a flower bed is phoolon ki kyari (फूलों की क्यारी). For where the word comes from and how to use it in a sentence, read our guide to bouquet meaning in Hindi.
Which flowers are used for puja?
Marigold (genda), hibiscus (gudhal), lotus (kamal), jasmine (chameli) and harsingar are the most common. Traditions differ by deity and by family, so follow your pandit or elders. Fresh flowers are best, so buy them on the day. Our puja calendar lists the festival dates for 2026 to 27.
