Diwali decoration ideas for home and office (2026)
You can decorate a home for Diwali for about ₹800 to ₹1,050: a 3 kg marigold toran, a petal rangoli and two strings of fairy lights. Diwali is on 8 November 2026, so fresh flowers go up the day before or that morning. Below: five ideas, an office version and the budget table.

How do you make a marigold toran for the door?
String 3 kg of marigold heads on thread, alternating orange and yellow, with a mango leaf between every few flowers. Tie two or three strands across the top of the door frame and let one long strand drop on each side. Use a needle with thread, not wire, so the flowers do not split.
Keep the door itself plain. A wooden or white door lets the marigold do the work, and a single brass bell or a small hanging lantern is enough.
How do you make a flower rangoli?
Draw a simple circle with chalk or rice flour at the entrance, about 60 to 90 cm wide. Fill it with 1 kg of marigold and rose petals in rings, dark to light, from the centre out. A brass urli of petals with a floating diya works for a small doorway.

How do you set up a diya corner?
Pick one corner, near the puja space or by a window, and keep it brass and clay only. Group 11 or 21 diyas on a low tray with a few marigold heads between them. Odd numbers are customary; the full puja steps are in our Lakshmi puja vidhi.

How do you decorate an office for Diwali?
Keep it small and fire-safe. A short marigold toran over the reception door, a brass urli of petals with LED tealights at the desk, and a single string of warm lights on the counter. For desks, one marigold string along the monitor top and a small diya tray is plenty.

What if I want a calm, minimal Diwali?
Use one flower and one metal. Marigold only, with brass diyas, on a cream or wooden surface, and warm white lights instead of coloured ones. Skip plastic hangings and glitter. A single large toran, hung well, does more than five small decorations scattered around the room.

Frequently asked questions
How much does Diwali decoration at home cost?
About ₹800 to ₹1,050 to do it yourself: 3 kg of marigold for a toran, 1 kg of petals for a rangoli and two fairy light strings (Lucknow wholesale marigold ₹100 to ₹160 per kg, 1 Oct 2026; Amazon.in, Sep 2026). Diyas are extra, from ₹69 a set.
How long does a marigold toran last?
About one to two days indoors, a little less in direct sun. Hang it on the morning of the day you need it, keep it out of the afternoon sun, and spray a little water in the evening. Mango leaves between the flowers last longer than the marigold.
Which flowers are best for a Diwali rangoli?
Marigold petals in orange and yellow, with rose or white chrysanthemum petals for contrast. Pluck petals fresh that day, because cut petals dry and darken within hours. Draw the outline with chalk or rice flour first, then fill it in from the centre outward.
Can I use real diyas in an office?
Check with building management first, because many offices do not allow open flames. LED tealights or battery diyas look almost the same in a brass urli of petals. If real diyas are allowed, keep them away from paper, curtains and files, and never leave them unattended.
When is Diwali in 2026?
Diwali and Lakshmi puja fall on Sunday 8 November 2026 (Drik Panchang, checked 14 Oct 2026). Plan decorations for the day before or that morning, since fresh marigold keeps for only a day or two. The puja and muhurat calendar lists the five-day dates.
